• After arrest, you will either be held in jail until a court date, or you will be released with a notice to appear for a court date. At this court date, you will need to tell the judge that you would like a public defender. You will then most likely need to provide the public defender’s office with proof of your financial situation, so they can best assist you. • Pull over in a safe area, out of the flow of traffic.
• Don’t get out unless the officer asks you too
• Keep your hands visible. If you have to reach for something to give the officer, make sure the officer can see what you are doing.
• Answer the officer’s questions honestly and completely. The more cooperation you give them the more they will help you.
• Police are trained to defend themselves first - if you make them feel threatened, they are going to defend themselves.
